Canada 1914-1918 Ypres - Ieper - 04/11/2010
Canada 1914-1918 Ypres is een Canadees project waarbij de namen van de 68.000 gesneuvelde Canadezen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog op een symbolische plaats geprojecteerd worden.
Vanaf donderdag 4 november, bij zonsondergang (17.15 uur), kun je gedurende zeven nachten op de muur aan het Belgische monument (Jules Coomansstraat, hoek Boterstraat - Neermarkt) de namen één voor één zien oplichten. De laatste naam wordt getoond net voor zonsopgang op de symbolische datum van 11 november.
De projectie is live te volgen via de website www.1914-1918.ca . Elke verwante kan via deze website opzoeken op welke dag en tijdstip de naam van hun gesneuveld familielid te zien zal zijn.
In 2008 was deze gigantische projectie al te zien op Trafalgar Square in Londen en in acht verschillende steden in Canada.

This is an event that will highlight Canada and its unique way of observance and remembering. In Trafalgar Square at the 2008 Canadian Vigil, the UK Minister for Veteran's Affairs said to me, 'why aren't we doing this?' No country before has projected the individual names of every soldier lost in such a living vigil. Building on the media interest in the UK in 2008, we will invite media coverage to Belgium.
The vision of the opening ceremony
- to mark the international cooperation in the name of remembrance and peace
- to acknowledge the terrible losses of Canada and all other countries in WWI
- to use poetry and music to address the inexpressible about remembrance
- to invite the next generation of young Canadians to speak of remembrance and welcome all the 150 participating Canadian schools.
The names appear projected on the wall until 6:15 am the next morning. On each quarter hour, starting at 5:30 pm, an image of one of the 3,400 cemeteries in Belgium, France and Canada appears for 20 seconds.

A Canadian student dedicated the vigil to the surviving families of the 68,000, and acknowledged that at that moment 150 schools across Canada are also starting their vigils.
